Visits to Bradford Literature Festival

Posted 5th July 2024

We were very fortunate to be invited by the organisers of the Bradford Literature Festival to attend a variety of different workshops this week at St. George's Hall. Literacy development is a key part of what we focus on at Dixons McMillan in every lesson and subject, and it was a great opportunity to be asked for so many of our students to take part. Staff from across the academy also attended and took part too, from English teachers to Science teachers, the behaviour team to Mountain Rescue staff.

On Wednesday, all of Year 7 took part in the Festival's 'Shaking up Shakespeare' day, which involved activities thinking about the Bard's use of language along with a dramatic reenactment of certain scenes from his most famous tragedy, Romeo & Juliet.

On Thursday, all of Year 8 took part in the 'Performance Poetry' day. This involved a number of workshops where students went beyond poetry on the page, and started to think and consider poetry in the form which it is intended, that is: to be performed to an audience.

On Friday, all of Year 9 took part in the 'Stand up and be counted!' day. This was all about students as young people making their voices heard in the right way, and linked really well to our Trust's focus on civic responsibility. Students were asked to create raps which focused on the issues which young people are important to them. A huge well done to Elora Marunda and Sakina Andre, who wrote a fantastic rap - and Elora then stood up and performed it to the whole concert hall!
